Winter in the Blue Mountains --2025

We raise Icelandic sheep on our small farm in northeastern Oregon. These produce wool, milk and meat for us as well as for sale, hence the quality and care of our animals is very important to us. All are fed a main diet of pasture, supplemented with orchard grass and alfalfa in the winter. We avoid feeding grain to the sheep except as an occasional treat or for milking ewes.

Lamb is an excellent source of iron and Vitamin B12 as well as many other nutrients.  Grass-fed lamb is even better, with a healthy omega 3 to omega 6 ratio of 1:2.  Compare that to grain-fed commercial chicken at 1:8.  A simple internet search will verify this.

We have full Icelandic lambs and Icelandic/Katahdin crosse. Lambs may be purchased in advance with a holding fee of $50.

The Icelandics are well known to spinners and felters for their remarkable dual wool fleece which comes in a variety of colors from white to rich browns to silver grey to black. The inner fleece, the thel, is soft as down and the long outer fleece, the tog,  is highly water repellent. Blended together, the two wools make a “lopi” yarn that is the standard for the famous Icelandic sweaters.

Finally, a word about sheep's milk. It is mild in taste like cow's milk only richer, a little sweeter and very nutritious, including being high in Vitamin K2 and mid-chain triglycerides.  It is also less likely to cause intestinal distress for those with lactose intolerance.  We milk once a day in the morning and leave the lambs on their moms during the day.   â€‹

We make creamy yogurt, skyr (an Icelandic cheese that's easy to make) and cheeses from the milk as well as using it fresh. It also makes great ice cream.
